Ant Prevention: Don’t Let Ants Take Over Your Home
“Help! I have an ant invasion!” I hear that a lot in the summer time. But the fact is, the ants invaded your property long before you were aware of them. Even though you generally don’t become aware of ants until you start seeing the long trails of ants on your sidewalk, or worse yet, when they are parading across your kitchen wall and into your cabinets, they have probably been on your property all winter long.
As it gets colder, ants go deep underground where the temperature is warmer, leaving you to believe that there are no ants on your property. To makes things worse, in the months of April and May while you are living under the mistaken belief that you are ant free, ants are busy increasing their colony, sometimes up to 10 times their original size! As it warms up, ants start coming up to forage for food making it appear that they just found their way onto your property.
While there is not much you can do while the ants are underground, there are some things you can do to keep from seeing those unwanted ant trails parading into your home.
Trim branches and limbs of trees and shrubs that touch your home to keep ants from gaining access via these routes
Caulk cracks and crevices around the foundation of your home to eliminate entry points into your home
Eliminate use of wood chip mulches and landscape plants which provide a good nesting environment for ants.
Eliminate food sources inside your home by putting food away immediately and keeping stored food in air-tight containers such as Tupperware or glass containers.
Provide a dry, vegetation-free border (ie: gravel or stones) around the perimeter of your house foundation to discourage nest building
Remove any firewood or debris against your home to eliminate possible nesting sites
Eliminate water sources by sealing leaky pipes and getting rid of unnecessary standing water
Clean up food and drink spills immediately to prevent providing an accidental food source
Clean the outside and bottom of your trash cans often
