Avoiding Insect Bites and Stings This SoCal Summer
Summer is the season of beautiful blue skies, great weather, and an abundance of outdoor activities with family and friends. There are pool parties, barbecues, and vacations which allow everyone to escape their regular routines. But, alas, summer is also the season of stings and insect bites. Bugs and bees are mating, swarming, gathering pollen, and more. To make sure you get to have fun experiencing all the joys of summer, here are the ways you can avoid the bee stings and bug bites that often hamper the enjoyment!
Be Attentive on Where They Live
Sometimes these creatures build their home out in open where they are easily seen, but more often they stake their claim in hidden spots, like in the ground, amid tree branches, or in the eaves of your home. Staying alert as you mow, sweep, garden, and clean can help you avoid bees, wasps, and other stingers as well as their stings and bites. If you are a fan of bare feet or flip flops, just know that bees love ground covers like clover and yellow jackets nest in the ground, so wearing shoes while frolicking (or working) in grassy areas can help you avoid stings.
Be Aware of What You Wear
When it comes to bugs and bees, attire and accouterments matter! The truth is bold colors and bright patterns, as well as shimmery, colorful jewelry can actually attract bees, mosquitoes, wasps, and more. Wearing muted summer hues and earth tones will help evade attention and escape unwanted stings and bites. Just for summer, you might want to leave the perfumes, colognes, body sprays, and other scented products inside because just as bugs and bees are attracted to flowers by scent, they can also be attracted to your favorite scent. If your summer plans will have you outside day and night, consider opting for fragrance free products for summer.
Check Your Drink
Summer means the need to stay hydrated and while water is the best choice, nearly everyone enjoys a cold, sweet beverage when hanging out with friends. As you enjoy, always check your can, bottle, or cup before you sip. Insects also enjoy a sweet treat and if you’re not paying attention, you might get a bit or sting from an insect sharing your drink!
