    Pest-Proofing Your Attic

Attic pests—like mice, rats, squirrels, and bats—are every homeowner’s nightmare. They bring unsanitary conditions (even disease) and can damage the house’s structure and insulation, requiring expensive repairs.
Keep these unwanted house guests out with some preventative measures, courtesy of Preferred Pest Control.

    Inspect the Attic

Household pests often enter the attic directly from outside, usually taking advantage of tiny cracks or holes in the walls and roof. Rodents can squeeze through surprisingly small openings (about the diameter of a quarter), and they won’t hesitate to make a small hole bigger if need be.

To prevent infestations before they become an issue, inspect your attic at least a couple of times per year. You’ll want to look for holes in the wall, of course, but also for any weakened or vulnerable areas that could allow access to mice and squirrels. You might need to replace rotting wood, swap out aging vent covers, or reinforce corners with gnaw-proof materials.

    Trim the Foliage

Are there trees or shrubs immediately adjacent to your house? These make it easy for squirrels and other rodents to reach your roof, where they may be able to gain access to your attic or walls. Weather damage to shingles often goes unnoticed for a while, and most household pests need only the tiniest opening to get in.

Ideally, it’s a good idea to avoid planting anything larger than flowers within ~10-20 feet of the home. If you do have a tree already in place that you can’t (or won’t) remove, make sure to at least keep the branches trimmed away from your house.

    Secure Outdoor Garbage Bins

Wondering what your garbage bins could possibly have to do with your attic? Most pests are drawn to houses for two reasons: warm shelter and food. If your garbage is easily accessible to rodents, raccoons, and insects, you’re going to draw in all sorts of unwanted house guests. And they’re more likely to get into your attic once they’re specifically searching for shelter around the house.

Outdoor bins—garbage, recycling, and compost—are a rich food source that many types of pest can smell from far away. Make sure yours are fitted with tight lids to limit the odor’s range, and to prevent any visitors from actually being able to access them.
