Getting Rid of Rodents in 2020

If you’ve ever had a rodent issue, you know they can be pests all year long. But, oh when winter comes and temperatures get cooler, rodents seek new shelter often in your home – basements, attics, and garages. No matter how secure you believe your home to be, they will get inside, carrying with them allergens, parasites, fleas, and diseases. They will also wreak havoc on home, gnawing your wood, damaging heating units, and even exposed wires. Here are some tips to help you protect your home and your loved ones from rodents this winter and all year long.

    Strategically Landscape

Rodents make themselves at home in your yard before they move into your home. Proper landscaping can help keep rodents out of your yard, and therefore help keep them out of your home. Start by eliminating any standing water. Next, keep fruit trees, vegetable plants, bushes, trees, and shrubs properly cared for, clearing away fallen leaves, debris, and the like. You’ll also want to keep everything around your homes exterior walls and roof timed back, not giving rodents any easy entryways into your home.

    Appropriately Store Your Food

Properly store your food.  Of course, this means keeping your kitchen and other areas used for eating free of crumbs, spills, etc., but also keeping food sources secure. How? Restrict eating to designated areas, keep pets on a feeding schedule so pet food isn’t lying around all day, store food in airtight containers, and keep lids on all trash cans.

Protect Your Walls from Rodent Invaders

Gather your supplies – steel wool and caulking foam, and get ready. Rodents seem to have the ability to walk through walls like ghostly apparitions, but in fact, they actually squeeze in through holes as small as a fourth of an inch. Your mission is to keep them out by inspecting windows, walls, doors, and baseboards for tiny holes which you will fill with bits of steel wool and foam, something they can’t gnaw through.

    Don’t Underestimate the Rodents

If you see even a single mouse, get ready! Often when you see one, there is already a bigger problem. They hide out in their nests, like rats, and multiply rapidly.
