How to Prevent Pests from Invading Pantry

Thanksgiving is a time to cherish with family and friends. However, if pantries and turkey dinner go unchecked, it’s chow time for pest-y Thanksgiving-crashers like Orange County German roaches, American roaches, and Oriental roaches, and Indian meal moths, houseflies and blowflies. With a little elbow grease and know-how, (thankfully!) Orange County residents and homeowners can send these pantry pests running. Find out how!

How Pantry Pests Fly Under the Radar in OC Homes

Torn open packaged food and half-capped storage lids are open invitations to Indian meal moth larvae (and silverfish). According to University of Nebraska, Indian meal moths lay their eggs near scrumptious pantry foods; once hatched, larvae wiggle through packaging holes. As the cornhusker school states, it’s the young Indian moth caterpillars that are the real dry food feasters, munching on grains, oats, dried fruits, even chocolate.

Orange County American Roaches Go Undetected Thanks to Food Processing Mishaps

American cockroaches are the food contamination stars in food processing facilities (not to mention, grocery stores, restaurants, and bakeries). Scurrying through neglected gaps in processing plants, these creepy crawlers start feasting and contaminating before food hits the shelf. Unfortunate consumers who (unknowingly) choose rancid food from grocery stores can still contract food poisoning and roach-borne illnesses despite not having an Orange County roach infestation.

    Shoo Fly, Don’t Bother Me

Fly larvae (maggots) may not love dry food but Thanksgiving feasts are still top targets for buzzing houseflies and blowflies. Like roaches, flies carry and spread bacteria via their legs. Should flies land on unwatched, delicious Thanksgiving morsels, Uncle Henry’s stuffing and mash potatoes could now have salmonella, e-coli, and bacteria—not to mention, fly vomit. Penn State researchers found common houseflies carry as much as 351 types of bacteria; less-common blowflies (regulars when temperatures are warm) have 316 strains. One more reason to keep unwatched plates and dishes covered.

Send Pantry Pests Packing and Reclaim OC Pantries and Homes

    Inspect, Inspect, Inspect

OC residents and homeowners can take matters in their own hands, inspecting kitchen and pantry cabinets, shelves, walls, and ceilings of Indian meal moth webbing. Also, pink, green, or yellow larvae squirming in packaged and stored dry goods is a sure sign of meal moth contamination. Fluttering fully grown meal moths near lighting and screens indicates meal moth larvae and caterpillar presence in and around dry food.

OC homeowners and residents should chuck ripped, packaged food and any goods (ripped or not) that has a foul (roach-y?) odor, slime, and any other roach indications (droppings, casings, or dead roaches).

This Dynamic Duo Keeps Fly Contamination at Bay

Fly swatters and mesh screen food covers are great go-tos to keep houseflies and blowflies from food. An unfolded napkin over unattended plates works too.

    A Word of Warning

While pesticides, insecticides and natural alternatives like boric acid usually are go-to pest DIY exterminators, don’t use them near or around food (or furry friends and children).
