Carpet Beetle Facts
The carpet beetle is an oval shaped beetle known for its white, black, and yellow coloration. They measures about 1-4mm in length, are most active during daytime, are good fliers, and feed on a variety of things including dead insects, grains, plant-based materials, and hair. As a result of their feeding habits, carpet beetles are known (as their name suggests) to infest carpets, upholstery, blankets, and clothing.
During the spring is when female carpet beetles lay their eggs (25-100 each) which hatch into larvae in the following 2 weeks. The larvae are brown and covered with hair and can sometimes take over a year to become adults. During this stage is when they most typically feed on fabric material and cause most damages as adult carpet beetles will prefer to feed on plants and flowers. Larvae prefer darkness while the adult carpet beetle is attracted to light and can often be found flying towards lights at night.
Carpet Beetle Infestation
Spotting adult carpet beetles is not all that difficult as they fly towards light so you may spot them gathering around windows or bright lights in your house. Often however, a carpet beetle infestation can go unnoticed for quite a while and the damage done by the carpet beetle larvae to carpets, upholstery, and clothing become the number 1 sign that you may have an infestation on your hands. Also, carpet beetle larvae shed and leave their skin behind so keep a lookout for that as well.
Typically, carpet beetles enter your home through openings and cracks in your windows, doors, and chimneys, but can also be brought in through plants and flowers from outside. To prevent a carpet beetle infestation, make sure to inspect and repair any cracks and holes that could serve as entrances. More often than not, a carpet beetle infestation can happen quickly and can go unnoticed by inhabitants of the house until the problem is very widespread. Because of this, it is our recommendation to seek professional pest control services to eliminate them from your property.
