In California, there are five species of termites: Western subterranean, Desert subterranean, Arid-land subterranean, Western drywood, and Pacific dampwood termites.

    Facts About Termites

In Orange County, the Western subterranean termite is most common, causing millions of dollars worth of damage to infected areas. These termites eat common timbers used for construction and leave the wood as a thin shell with a honey-comb look to it.
The Western subterranean termite caste system includes queen, king, worker, soldier, and reproductive termites, each who play different roles to help in the survival of their colony. Queen termites can live more than twenty-five years and can lay 2,000 eggs per day so getting rid of termites as soon as possible is crucial.

Worker termites are the destructive ones who eat wood to provide food for the others. They are about 1/8″ in length, translucent in color, blind, and work 24/7 for the 2 years that they are alive.
Soldier termites defend the colony, usually against ants, and have a large rectangular shaped head that is orange in color with pincers.

Reproductive termites, also known as swarmers, have wings and can be seen during daylight. They ride the wind as their flying skills leave something to be desired. Reproductive termites’ purpose is to find a mate and become king and queen of a new termite colony. These termites are seen in the springtime.
