Tick Facts

Ticks are classified as arachnids and are very small creatures – an adult engorged with blood can be over 1cm long – and they vary in color depending on the species. California is home to a few different types of ticks which include the Blacklegged tick, Lone Star tick, and Dog tick, among others.

Ticks are external parasites that live on the blood of mammals, birds, and even reptiles and usually hang out in wooded areas or places with high vegetation. They prefer places with warm, humid climates as this supports their overall life cycle.

Tick Control

Unfortunately, the only sign of a tick infestation are the ticks themselves. Out-of-the-blue medical symptoms can also be a sign as ticks are known to transmit disease through their bites. Ticks usually enter the home by being carried by pets or people.

If you find a tick on a person or a pet, be careful when trying to remove it. Ticks should not be crushed as this can release dangerous fluids within the body and may cause disease. To remove a tick, use a pair of tweezers and grasp the tick behind the head and pull it out very slowly. Be sure to wash and disinfect the wound and seek medical attention immediately if any medical concerns result from the bite.

To help discourage tick infestation, keep your grass cut short and seal all gaps that you find around or within your home. Also, get rid of bird or rodent nests as ticks are known to make these their homes.
