Spring is coming! (Also Earwigs)
Don’t panic because despite what you might have heard, earwigs do not enter people’s ears while they sleep.
The myth that these insects go into people’s ears and burrow into the brain to cause insanity is completely untrue but interestingly enough is how the insect got its name.
The Earwig (Latin name Order Dermaptera, meaning “skin winged”) is a blackish brown flat and thin insect ranging from ¼ to 1 inch in length. Earwigs have pinchers on their abdomens (which is why they are also known to some as pincher bugs) and the adults have 2 sets of wings on their thorax but even with those . . . they are poor fliers.
For defense, the earwig can emit a bad smelling liquid to scare off any enemies and they produce pheromones to stay together in large numbers.
The earwig is not dangerous at all but can pinch you if provoked but it is rare for even that to happen.
Earwigs are a seasonal insect as they lay eggs in autumn and hatch during the spring.
During the daytime, earwigs hide in damp areas such as under rocks and inside cracks. Inside your home, earwigs usually keep to where there is water, such as kitchens and bathrooms but they can be found almost is every part of a home.
At night however, earwigs become active and love to eat plants and other small insects. So if you notice that there’s nothing left of your plant’s leaves besides the skeletal vein, you might have an earwig infestation.
Prevention and Treatment
To prevent an earwig infestation, remove their hiding places first and foremost. Remove all debris and clutter from outside your home as earwigs tend to hide under anything cool and dark during the day. Be wary of light sources in your home as this can attract earwigs to come inside during the night as they are attracted to light. They are also attracted to moisture so ensure that your house is proper ventilated.
