There are over 12,400 species of ants on planet Earth and many more that are undiscovered. In fact, for every person on Earth, there are 1,500,000 ants!
Luckily, California only had to deal with 270 different species and most common type that bothers Orange County and Southern California homes is the ant known as the Argentine Ant. This ant was brought to the USA thanks to Brazil and the transportation of coffee in the 1890s. They quickly spread since then and become the most prominent ant. We can however be appreciative of the fact that they help stop the spread of other ants such as fire ants.
Southern California Argentine Ant Facts
The Argentine ants are known to adapt unlike any other ant here. Other types of ants are very particular in there nesting habits but the Argentine ant can nest almost anywhere such as in the ground, in houses, under houses, and in trees. They have very big nests and have multiple queens. Their colonies range in the millions.
Because they are new in the area, natural predators don’t exist to the Argentine Ant. They mate underground (unlike most ants) and are further protected from being eaten.
Cooperation and Communication help Argentine ants survive. If they come under attack from chemicals or water, a thousand or so worker ants will move with a queen ant and relocated.
Usually, is an ant colony comes across another ant colony they fight to the death. Argentine ants however, will instead work together and form what is known as a super colony. One of these can contain tens of millions of ants!
Control and Management of Ant Infestation
Since these ants are so adaptable and survivable, how do you stop an ant infestation of Argentine ants?
There is some good news. Chemical sensitivity is very very high to the Argentine ant. Extermination and control of Argentine ants include applying a chemical that can spread within their colony. Ants carry back the product into their colony which spreads and exterminates the entire colony.
